Australian medtech, Laronix has reached another critical milestone in its journey delivering life-changing solutions for laryngectomy patients, with its groundbreaking AVA Voice bionic voice box now commercially available in Australia.
With a choice of either male or female natural-sounding voices, patients who have lost their voice due to laryngeal cancer can regain the ability to speak, laugh and even sing using the device.
The technology has been approved by both the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration and the US Food and Drug Administration.
“What sets Laronix apart as a world pioneer in medical voice technology development is our close connection with patients and clinicians, as well as our unwavering commitment to improving their experience,” the company said in a LinkedIn statement.
“Our confidence in AVA Voice’s capabilities is backed by over 18 months of successful clinical adoption and our status as an ISO-13485 certified medical device manufacturer.”
In a nod to Laronix founders, Dr Farzaneh Ahmadi and Dr Mousa Ahmadi’s Iranian heritage, the device’s name “Ava” has Persian origins and means “beautiful singing voice”.
In further recent announcements, Laronix has also advised a new partnership with Greater Baltimore Medical Center in the US, as the first certified healthcare institution globally to offer AVA Voice for those affected by voice loss.
Bionics Gamechangers Australia: supporting innovators to thrive
Laronix was the recipient of a Major Prize through the inaugural Bionics Challenge in 2021, organised by Bionics Gamechangers Australia (then Bionics Queensland) – an experience Dr Farzaneh Ahmadi said was a huge boost to their organisation’s growth.
“Laronix’s journey – as much as incredibly fruitful – has followed the standard process of an innovative technology development which is only possible if the company can use the opportunity of learning from a wealth of wisdom and genuine advice of industry experts who truly believe in supporting innovation,” reflected Dr Ahmadi.
“The funding and mentoring we received through the Challenge came at a critical phase for Laronix, and was transformative as we worked towards launching our device in Australia and the United States.”
